Capt. CUTTS was of honorable descent from the early settlers of this region and
highly esteemed as a worthy,
patriotic and public spirited citizen, a generous friend, and patron of enlightened
and general education sound morals and religion. By his superior energy and judgment and
skill as a merchant, he amassed much wealth but which he irrecoverably lost,
chiefly through the Embargo Act of 1807 and by the war with Great Britain in 1812.

Mrs. CUTTS was a daughter of the late Charles CHAUNCY Esqr. of Portsmouth, N.H.
and grand- daughter of the late Rev. Dr. CHAUNCY of Boston,
a kind-hearted charitable worthy and pious lady.

Rev. John NEWMARCH, the first pastor of the First Congregational Church in Kittery,
died 15 Jan 1754, aged 81 yrs. He graduated at Harvard, 1690, commenced his ministry in Kittery
as early as April, 1695, was ordained pastor of the church 4 Nov 1714 and continued
his pastorate until 1751.
